The Maine Haunted Trail

Maine wears its haunted history mostly along salt water. Shipwreck lighthouses stand on outer islands and sea captains built grand houses in old shipbuilding towns. Colonial graveyards nearby still mark New England's first accused witches by name. Inland, mill towns and college campuses hold a quieter version of the same record. More than fifty stops make up the statewide network, most within a short drive of the coast. The featured route sticks to that southern stretch, a compact loop for visitors who want lighthouses and historic inns without chasing the whole shoreline.
