The Most Haunted Places in America

There is no end to the "most haunted" lists that you can find on the web. Almost all of them rank by reputation: the places people have heard of, in the order people have heard of them. This index ranks by evidence. For every state, HauntBound documented the sites where reports actually concentrate, then ranked them by independent sources, depth of documented history, and how far back the accounts go. Every entry carries a family-suitability rating, and every one has been checked for what you can genuinely visit, book, or stay in. The result is a ranking a fact-checker can follow and a family can use. Pick any state below; each page shows its numbers, its top ten, and the method behind them.

HauntBound documents 6,245 haunted locations across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

That count is places. The 499 ghost tour operators in the index have their own pages and are listed separately, not counted here.

What makes this ranking different

Methodology

For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
