   Methodist minister William Sketoe was seized by Confederate Home Guard troops and hanged at the Choctawhatchee River bridge near Newton on December 3, 1864, accused of desertion after tending his ill wife. Because Sketoe was tall, a hole was dug beneath his feet, and for roughly 125 years afterward, locals reported the hole refilling itself no matter how often it was covered. The refilling stopped in 1990, when a flood buried the site under rock.
