   Built around 1769 as a blockhouse for Fort Panmure, this building became Richard King's tavern in 1789, serving Natchez Trace travelers. A 1930s renovation found the skeletal remains of three people behind the fireplace with a jeweled dagger; none were identified. Local tradition names one victim Madeline, said to have been killed and hidden in the walls, and visitors report a crying baby, figures in mirrors, and a woman in period dress upstairs.

   Built in three phases between 1797 and 1849, McRaven's oldest section began as a highwayman's hideout. Stephen Howard added a wing in 1836, the year his wife died in childbirth there; John Bobb added the Greek Revival front in 1849, and the grounds served as a Confederate camp during the 1863 siege before Bobb was killed by soldiers in 1864. Tour guides report a bride's apparition near the staircase and footsteps attributed to Bobb.

   William Faulkner bought this 1844 house in 1930 and lived there until his death in 1962, writing most of his major fiction inside it. Its best-known ghost story, that the original owner's daughter leaped from a balcony and was buried under a magnolia tree, was Faulkner's invention, told to family and later mistaken for local history; the curator says no ghost appears in any record. Visitors still describe a wandering presence they take for Faulkner.

   Amos Deason built this Greek Revival home in 1847, the oldest surviving structure in Jones County. On October 5, 1863, guerrilla leader Newton Knight shot and killed Confederate Major Amos McLemore on the front porch, an episode later dramatized in the film Free State of Jones. Visitors report five presences, most often a figure resembling McLemore near the porch, and cold spots and unexplained sounds; local tradition holds that his blood soaked into the floorboards.
