The Vermont Haunted Trail

Vermont's ghost stories tend to live in stone. Old burying grounds and marble quarry towns hold most of the record, along with the elaborate grief-memorials its Gilded Age industrialists built for their own families. The state's small size means its haunted sites cluster along a handful of well-traveled roads, from the Champlain valley in the west to the Connecticut River towns in the east, rather than spreading thin. Roughly three dozen documented stops make up the network so far. The featured route runs the state's mountainous center, a north-south drive built for visitors who want granite history and old inns on the same trip.
