- 1. Franklin Castle Hannes Tiedemann, a German-born grocer and banker, built Franklin Castle in Cleveland between 1881 and 1883; several family members died during his ownership, though none died inside the house. The haunted reputation took shape in the 1960s, when a family there from 1968 to 1974 described cold rooms and music from the third-floor ballroom when empty. 5 original accounts · documented across 3 decades, 1968-2016 · retold in 1 later publication Disputed by a historical authority. Wikipedia's account states the human bones discovered in a closet in 1975, one of the house's most famous pieces of evidence, are believed to have been planted by a later owner to publicize his ghost tours of the property.
- 2. Madison Seminary Madison Seminary opened as a boarding school in 1846, became a home for Civil War widows and Army nurses in 1891, and served as a mental-health annex from 1962 to 1975. A 1962 sale advertisement described the building as 'May Be Haunted.' The reputation drew two 2019 television productions, A&E's Ghost Hunters and Travel Channel's Destination Fear, whose crews described voices, shadow figures, and unexplained contact; the building runs as a ghost-hunt venue. 5 original accounts · documented across 5 decades, 1977-2019 · retold in 5 later publications

Methodology
For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.
Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.
Corrected October 15, 2026: the Commodore Perry Building in Toledo was withdrawn because it is now an apartment building, so Toledo's count is now 10. Ohio's documented total stays at 209 until the November update.
Updated October 19, 2026: listings that could not be sourced, or that are private or have no public access, were withdrawn after an October review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
