Madison Seminary was chartered in 1845 and opened the following year as Madison High School, a boarding school offering secondary and early college-level instruction near the intersection of Hubbard and Middle Ridge roads. Cyrus Hartwell taught the first classes to both male and female students, and enrollment topped 150 by the late 1840s. The school later moved to its current site, where a larger brick building went up in 1859 to house the growing student body. Declining enrollment, driven by the spread of public high schools under Ohio law, closed the seminary in 1881, and the buildings sat empty for a decade.
In 1891, the Woman's Relief Corps -- the women's auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic -- bought the property and opened it as the Madison Home, housing Civil War veterans' widows, mothers, and former Army nurses for whom the war's end had left no provision. The state took ownership in 1904, renaming it the Home for Ohio Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Their Wives, Mothers, Widows, and Army Nurses, and operated it without charge to residents until 1962.
On June 30, 1962, Ohio's Department of Mental Hygiene and Correction assumed control, evicted the remaining widows, and used the building through 1975 to house patients transferred from Cleveland State Hospital, under the name Opportunity Village. The state shelved the project in 1975, and Lake County later acquired the property. Madison Seminary was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 22, 1979. Since 1993 it has been privately owned; the current operator, the Mad Project LLC, runs the site as a paranormal tourism venue.

Rumors that Madison Seminary was haunted began circulating not long after the building fell into disuse, and by the time of its 1962 transfer, a sale advertisement is reported to have described it plainly as 'May Be Haunted.' Local coverage over the following decades -- including a 2014 Star Beacon feature calling it 'one of Ohio's most haunted places' -- kept the reputation alive even as the building sat mostly vacant.
That reputation drew two national television productions. The A&E revival of 'Ghost Hunters' filmed an episode there in 2019 titled 'There's Something in the Seminary,' and the Travel Channel series 'Destination Fear' devoted its sixth episode, which aired November 30, 2019, to an overnight investigation of the building; the crew described hearing voices, seeing shadow figures, and experiencing what they characterized as physical contact with an unseen presence. The current operator now runs the building as a dedicated ghost-hunt venue, hosting public and private overnight investigations most weekends.

Tooele, UT
The building at 140 E 200 S in Tooele, Utah was originally constructed in 1873 as a private residence by Samuel F. Lee. It was converted into a hospital serving the Tooele area and operated as a medical and elderly care facility through much of the 20th century. The hospital closed in 2001 when a modern medical center opened elsewhere in the county. In 2006, the building was converted into Asylum 49, a haunted attraction and paranormal investigation venue.
Winchester, IN
The Randolph County Infirmary was built in 1899 to serve the county's poor, sick, mentally ill, and orphaned. The brick institutional building, distinguished by its twin witch's hat towers, sits on what was once a 350-acre farm just south of Winchester, Indiana. It is preserved by S.T.O.P. (Saving the Old Properties) and operates today as a paranormal-investigation site.

The Randolph County Infirmary traces its origins to Indiana's 1820s poor-relief system, which evolved into a formal county asylum by 1851. After the original wooden building burned in 1857, a brick replacement was built. The current 58,000-square-foot, four-story facility opened in December 1899 on the original foundation. Approximately 1,487 people resided there between 1899 and 2006, with approximately 500 dying there; only those not claimed by family received unmarked burials on the grounds. The facility closed in 2006 and now operates as a paranormal investigation venue.
