The Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad built its line through a remote stretch of Vinton County hillside in 1856, cutting a masonry tunnel to carry track over what would become the town of Moonville. Landowner Samuel Coe donated property to bring the railroad through, and the resulting settlement grew up around coal and clay extraction, peaking at roughly 100 residents in the 1870s under the M&C and, later, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
The town's fortunes tracked the region's coal reserves. As mining declined through the early twentieth century, Moonville's population thinned out; the last family left in 1947, and by the 1960s every building except the tunnel and the small hillside cemetery had disappeared. Freight trains continued to use the line for decades after the town itself was gone, passing through under Chessie System and later CSX ownership, until the last scheduled train ran in 1985 and the line was formally abandoned by 1988.
Vinton and Athens counties acquired the abandoned rail corridor with Clean Ohio Conservation Fund grants, and it now forms the roughly 10-mile Moonville Rail-Trail through Zaleski State Forest, open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The tunnel — a masonry structure distinct from the trail's other, timber-built King Switch Tunnel in Athens County — remains the corridor's most recognizable landmark and the physical anchor for Moonville's ghost stories, which the Vinton County Convention and Visitors Bureau now marks with an annual 'Midnight at Moonville' event each October.

The most commonly told Moonville legend involves a railroad worker — described in different tellings as a brakeman or an engineer — who died on the tracks near the tunnel in the late 1800s and is said to reappear at night swinging a lantern. Some regional accounts hold that the swinging light was reported often enough that the railroad installed a signal near the site in 1981 after engineers repeatedly braked for what they took to be a person on the tracks. A second recurring figure, sometimes called the Lavender Lady, is associated with the scent of lavender or floral perfume and the sight of an elderly woman along the trail who disappears when approached; other tellings place a young woman's death on the trestle over Raccoon Creek around 1905. A third figure, known locally as the Bully, is said to appear on the hillside above the tunnel.
The surrounding cemetery and the fact that the Marietta and Cincinnati line recorded numerous fatalities on or near the tracks over its operating life have fed the town's reputation as one of Ohio's most durable ghost-town legends. The Ohio Exploration Society has conducted repeated investigations at the tunnel, documenting EMF readings, EVP recordings, and visitor reports consistent with the standard lantern and lady accounts. SyFy's paranormal travel series 'Haunted Highway' featured Ohio Exploration Society members discussing Moonville in a 2013 episode, and the tunnel appears regularly in regional ghost-lore writing and guidebooks covering southeast Ohio. The Vinton County Convention and Visitors Bureau leans into the reputation directly with 'Midnight at Moonville,' an organized October event at the tunnel and trail.
