  1. 1. Waverly Hills Sanatorium Louisville · Asylum / Hospital · Family Comfort: Not Recommended This Louisville tuberculosis sanatorium opened in 1910 and expanded into today's five-story Gothic building in 1926, treating patients until streptomycin ended the TB era and the facility closed in 1961; researchers put the death toll near 6,000, below the inflated figures often repeated. Visitors report shadow figures and a sense of being touched in the 500-foot supply tunnel once used to move the deceased, and investigators document cold spots and EVP recordings throughout the building. 9 original accounts · documented across 2 decades, 1928-1932 · retold in 6 later publications Contradicted by physical evidence. American Hauntings, a paranormal-history research organization, states that the sanatorium's famous Room 502 legend is physically implausible, and a second source adds that no records or news reports of the alleged deaths have ever been found.

  7. 7. A gnarled tree said to have grown from the stump still stands, and visitors leave beads and keys in its branches for luck. 3 original accounts · documented in 1890 · retold in 6 later publications
  8. 8. The Brown Hotel Louisville · Haunted Hotel / Inn · Family Comfort: High Developer James Graham Brown opened this 16-story Georgian Revival hotel in 1923 and lived in a suite there until his 1969 death; its kitchen invented the Hot Brown sandwich in 1926. Staff and guests describe a man in an old-style tuxedo seen in the lobby, mezzanine, and ballroom, trailing cigar smoke, and the hotel keeps the 14th and 15th floors, where Brown lived, out of guest inventory over reports of footsteps. 4 original accounts · retold in 5 later publications

Superlatives

Methodology

For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.

The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.

Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.

Updated October 19, 2026: listings that could not be sourced, or that are private or have no public access, were withdrawn after an October review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.

This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
