John M. Bayless made his fortune in railroad expansion across Indian Territory in the late nineteenth century. In 1902 he began construction of an ambitious four-tower Gothic brick mansion at 121 North Chickasaw Avenue in Claremore — a 9,000-square-foot structure that was among the most elaborate private residences then being built in northeastern Oklahoma.
Bayless did not live to see the house finished. He died of appendicitis in 1907, months before construction was complete. The house passed through several owners after his death; at some point during the 1940s, a young woman tenant died by suicide in the building, according to accounts documented by local historians and paranormal investigators. The circumstances of her death are not fully established in the public record.
The Rogers County Historical Society eventually acquired the mansion and restored it for use as a museum. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural and historical significance for the region. Today it operates as a public museum with guided tours, and the Rogers County Historical Society has hosted paranormal investigation events on the premises.

The Hay family acquired the house in 1926 and donated it to The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 1977.
