Key West's historic Old Town district developed through the 19th century around the maritime salvage ('wrecking') industry, cigar manufacturing, and the sponge trade, and today forms a National Historic Landmark district. Several Old Town buildings are individually documented historic properties: the Oldest House Museum, built around 1829 for Captain Francis Watlington, is recognized as the oldest surviving residence in Key West and South Florida; the Curry Mansion, built by the family of Florida's first self-made millionaire William Curry, is a house museum and inn; and Audubon House, restored in the 1950s, commemorates ornithologist John James Audubon's 1832 visit to the island.
La Concha Hotel, opened in 1926, is a downtown Duval Street landmark that has hosted notable literary and entertainment figures. St. Paul's Episcopal Church, whose earlier structures were lost to fire and hurricane, anchors a historic churchyard on Duval Street.
