Ranked
- 1. Fort Laramie National Historic Site Fort Laramie began in 1834 as the fur-trading post Fort William, became an Army post in 1849, and was abandoned in 1890; it is a National Historic Site, and Old Bedlam, the officers' quarters, is Wyoming's oldest military building. Staff describe a presence called George in the Captain's Quarters, a cavalry officer in Old Bedlam who quiets visitors, and the Lady in Green, an agent's daughter who vanished on horseback and reappears every seven years. 8 original accounts · documented across 6 decades, 1834-1890 · retold in 4 later publications
- 2. Sweetwater County Library HauntBound identified six distinct published accounts at this museum site, across five kinds of published source. One later publication retells those accounts. Reported phenomena include disembodied voices and electrical anomalies. 6 original accounts · documented across 13 decades, 1862-2026 · retold in 1 later publication
- 3. Historic Occidental Hotel & Saloon HauntBound identified five distinct published accounts at this working hotel, across four kinds of published source. - 4. Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel The Irma Hotel opened November 1, 1902 in Cody, Wyoming, built for about $80,000 by Buffalo Bill Cody and named for his daughter Irma; its cherry-wood back bar was reportedly a gift from Queen Victoria. Employees describe spurs jingling at the bar before the dining room opens, loud knocking at guest doors attributed to Cody's habit of delivering wake-up calls, and Irma's rocking chair, in the suite that bears her name, rocking on its own. 4 original accounts · documented across 5 decades, 1902-2002 · retold in 4 later publications
- 5. Historic Atlas Theatre The Atlas Theatre building went up in 1887 in Cheyenne and became a theater in 1908; the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players began staging shows in 1966, bought the building in 1971, and it joined the National Register in 1973. Investigators report orbs, odd electrical behavior, and recorded voices, along with a woman in white seen at the second-floor windows who vanishes, and a playful presence blamed for objects that disappear and reappear during rehearsals. 4 original accounts · documented across 9 decades, 1882-2023 · retold in 6 later publications
- 6. Laramie Plains Civic Center Built in 1878 as the East Side School, Wyoming's oldest school building, the site required relocating vigilante-killing victims' bodies before construction; the school closed in 1979 and reopened in 1982 as the Laramie Plains Civic Center. Staff working late report lights switching on unaided, objects displaced in the classrooms, disembodied voices, footsteps with no source, and rose perfume in the hallways; a 2022 investigation found a presence, friendly and curious, inhabits the building. 3 original accounts · documented across 5 decades, 1800-2024 · retold in 1 later publication
- 7. Wyoming Frontier Prison Wyoming Frontier Prison was completed in 1901 with 104 cells and no electricity or running water; over 80 years, 13,500 people were incarcerated and 14 executions carried out, nine on the Julien Gallows and five in a gas chamber from 1936, before the prison closed in 1981. Investigators report cell doors opening and closing on their own, windows rattling with no wind, and objects found displaced overnight, along with visitors touched, their hair pulled, and their names called in empty corridors. 4 original accounts · documented across 8 decades, 1901-2021 · retold in 6 later publications

- 9. Sheridan Inn The Sheridan Inn opened May 27, 1893; part owner Buffalo Bill Cody used its porch to audition riders and sharpshooters for his Wild West Show. Catherine 'Miss Kate' Arnold worked there for 64 years from 1901, and when she died in 1968 her ashes were placed inside the wall of her third-floor room at her request. Staff and guests report doors closing unaided, lamps switching on in empty rooms, and cold spots in her quarters. 3 original accounts · documented across 6 decades, 1893-2025 · retold in 5 later publications

Methodology
For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.
Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.
This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
