- 1. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was lit in 1871 and decommissioned three years later; it is Oregon's only surviving wooden lighthouse and opened as a museum in 1956. Its ghost story traces to fiction: Lischen Miller's 1899 story 'The Haunted Light' told of a girl named Muriel Trevenard who vanished inside the lighthouse, leaving only her handkerchief. No such disappearance is on record, but visitors report footsteps on the stairs and a woman glimpsed in period dress. 6 original accounts · documented across 3 decades, 1920-2009
- 2. Wolf Creek Inn Wolf Creek Inn opened in 1883 as a stagecoach stop on the Applegate Trail and is the oldest operating inn in the Pacific Northwest; the State of Oregon restored it between 1975 and 1979. Novelist Jack London stayed there and finished The Valley of the Moon in 1913. Guests have reported his apparition and voice in the room where he slept, along with doors opening and closing on their own and footsteps in the corridors. 6 original accounts · documented across 4 decades, 1879-2023 · retold in 4 later publications
- 3. Geiser Grand Hotel The Geiser Grand opened in 1889 as the Hotel Warshauer during a mining boom and was renamed for owner Albert Geiser in 1902; it closed in 1968, sat vacant for decades, and reopened in 1993. Staff and guests describe a 'Lady in Blue,' Annabelle Geiser, on the staircase and near Room 302, with footsteps after hours and cold near the mezzanine. Methodology
For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.
Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.
Updated October 19, 2026: listings that could not be sourced, or that are private or have no public access, were withdrawn after an October review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
Updated October 23, 2026: more listings were withdrawn after a dignity and sourcing review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
