- 4. Monroe House This mid-19th-century Hartford City house drew national attention in 2016 when Paranormal Lockdown hosts filming an episode discovered human skeletal remains in the basement crawlspace, estimated by a local funeral director at more than a century old; the case was never identified. Multiple investigation teams have reportedly left mid-session, describing featureless shadow figures and a hostile, non-human presence, along with unexplained fires in the basement and disembodied voices. 7 original accounts · documented across 2 decades, 1990-2014 · retold in 3 later publications
- 5. Story Inn Founded in 1851 by Dr. George Story under a federal land patent, this logging village declined after the Depression and sat abandoned until new owners reassembled it as Indiana's oldest country inn in the 1980s. Guests have logged hundreds of encounters with the Blue Lady, said to be Story's wife, described with striking blue eyes and a scent of cherry tobacco, in a guest book the current owner says fills up faster than he expected. 5 original accounts · documented across 3 decades, 1970-2023 · retold in 7 later publications

- 9. The Haunted Bridge of Avon Built in 1906-07 for the Big Four Railroad, this 305-foot arch bridge over White Lick Creek near Avon still carries active freight and appears on the town's official seal; a newspaper recorded reports of unexplained sounds there as early as 1908. Legend holds a laborer was entombed in the bridge's wet concrete, his moaning heard when trains cross overhead, and locals still honk their horns passing beneath as an old local custom. 7 original accounts · documented in 1908 · retold in 1 later publication Disputed by a historical authority. A local historian interviewed by an Indianapolis TV station said she could find no accident record confirming a construction worker died at the bridge, and the report notes the 'screams' many visitors describe may be the sound of trains crossing it.
- 10. The Athenaeum (Das Deutsche Haus) HauntBound identified seven distinct published accounts at this museum site, across four kinds of published source. One later publication retells those accounts. Reported phenomena include disembodied voices and objects moving. 7 original accounts · documented in 1911 · retold in 1 later publication

Methodology
For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.
Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.
Corrected October 15, 2026: a Hoosier National Forest cemetery listing near Bloomington was withdrawn because neither its legend nor its location could be sourced, so Bloomington's count is now 6. Indiana's documented total stays at 141 until the November update.
Updated October 19, 2026: listings that could not be sourced, or that are private or have no public access, were withdrawn after an October review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
Updated October 23, 2026: more listings were withdrawn after a dignity and sourcing review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
