Henry Kaiser — the industrialist who also built Kaiser Hospital on the Ala Wai waterfront — purchased the Waikiki beachfront parcel that would become Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1954 and opened an initial hotel structure the same year. Conrad Hilton acquired the property in 1961, and the resort expanded in stages across the following decades, eventually adding the distinctive Rainbow Tower (whose facade mosaic, completed 1968, remains one of the world's largest ceramic murals) and the Ali'i Tower.
The 22-acre resort sits between the beach and the Ala Moana Boulevard corridor, wedged between Fort DeRussy Military Reservation and the canal mouth. At full build-out it encompasses more than 2,500 rooms across five towers plus a shopping village, multiple pools, and Waikiki's only full-service hotel beach. The complex has hosted a range of public events, including Fourth of July fireworks displays that became a standing weekly tradition for decades.

In Hawaiian tradition, Pele is understood to walk among people in human form, sometimes appearing as an elderly woman, sometimes as a young one. Accounts of Pele encounters at Waikīkī hotels are not uncommon in local lore, and the Lady in Red at Hilton Hawaiian Village sits within this broader tradition of the goddess moving through the island's landscapes. Tour operators note this framing while acknowledging the murder-victim interpretation circulates simultaneously.
Separately, the resort's 17th floor has generated its own body of reports: sliding doors opening and closing without apparent cause, cold spots, and the sense of a presence in a room associated with a guest who died there. The hotel does not offer paranormal programming, and the lore persists primarily through Honolulu ghost-tour operators and published accounts.
