FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Teton County holds two of Wyoming's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, two Teton County places, Old Faithful Inn and the Wort Hotel, rank among Wyoming's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 37 Wyoming sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Old Faithful Inn, the seven-story log hotel architect Robert Reamer designed for the Yellowstone Park Association, opened in 1904 and ranks #8. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1914. Staff describe running footsteps along the hotel's upper balconies after the building closes for the season, and guests have reported a phantom child who asks for help finding his parents. The inn's best-known story, the Headless Bride, was invented by an assistant manager, George Bornemann, who admitted in a 1991 interview that he made it up.

The Wort Hotel, the Tudor Revival hotel brothers John and Jess Wort built in downtown Jackson in 1941, ranks #10. Two separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff credit a former maintenance engineer, Robert "Bob" Tomingas, who joined the hotel in 1950, with rearranging tools in the shop and once positioning a wrench to point out a hidden pipe leak. The hotel's own blog describes him as a valued, if unseen, member of the team.

Statewide, Fort Laramie National Historic Site ranks #1.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Teton County holds two of Wyoming's ten most haunted places

Two Teton County places, Old Faithful Inn (#8) and the Wort Hotel (#10), rank among Wyoming's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index, which ranks sites by separate published accounts rather than fame. Old Faithful Inn, the 1904 log hotel beside Yellowstone's famous geyser, is best known for a ghost story its own staff admit was invented in 1983. At the Wort Hotel in Jackson, staff credit a former maintenance engineer, Bob, with quietly keeping the place running. Both hotels welcome overnight guests.
