Sheridan Inn ranks #9 among Wyoming's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, the Sheridan Inn ranks #9 among Wyoming's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 37 Wyoming sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Sheridan Inn, modeled on a Scottish hunting lodge by architect Thomas Kimball and opened in 1893 as Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show audition headquarters, ranks #9. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff and guests describe doors closing on their own, lamps switching on in empty hallways and persistent cold spots in the third-floor room of longtime housekeeper Catherine "Miss Kate" Arnold, who worked at the Inn for 64 years and, at her request, had her ashes placed inside its wall after she died in 1968.
Statewide, Fort Laramie National Historic Site ranks #1, and Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #8.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
