A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel in Cody ranks #4 among Wyoming's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 37 Wyoming sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel, the hotel showman William F. Cody built in 1902 and named for his youngest daughter, Irma, ranks #4. Four separate published accounts describe activity there. Employees describe the sound of spurs jingling at the cherry-wood bar, reportedly a gift from Queen Victoria, before the dining room opens, and guests have reported recurring activity in Room 35, including an overnight stay described to Cowboy State Daily in 2025.
Statewide, Fort Laramie National Historic Site ranks #1, and Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #8.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
