Kenosha's Durkee Mansion ranks #4 among Wisconsin's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Durkee Mansion in Kenosha ranks #4 among Wisconsin's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 128 Wisconsin sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Durkee Mansion / Kemper Center ranks #4. Charles Durkee, finishing his term as U.S. Senator, built the mansion in 1861 on the Lake Michigan shoreline; in 1865 the property became Kemper Hall, an Episcopal girls school run by the Sisters of St. Mary until its 1975 closure. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1996. In the mansion's original wing, visitors describe footsteps on the old wood staircases when the building is closed, with no source identified. Kemper Center does not promote itself as a haunted attraction; the lore comes mainly from Milwaukee Magazine and regional travel coverage.

Statewide, the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee ranks #1 and is also the state's most famous haunted site.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Durkee Mansion, 6501 3rd Ave., Kenosha, is a house museum open for self-guided visits Tuesday through Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; admission is free.
