FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Multnomah County holds three of Oregon's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, three Multnomah County places rank among Oregon's ten most haunted in HauntBound's 2026 index, including Troutdale's McMenamins Edgefield at #5. The index ranks 90 Oregon sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

McMenamins Edgefield ranks #5, and no Oregon site has more separate published accounts. The Multnomah County Poor Farm opened here in 1911 and later became Edgefield Manor nursing home, closing in 1982 before restoration into a hotel and resort. Eight separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 2002. Guests and staff keep a front-desk ghost log, describing apparitions on the upper floors and sensations in the winery, once its morgue.

Pittock Mansion ranks #8. Newspaper publisher Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana Burton Pittock, completed the 46-room French Renaissance chateau in 1914; Georgiana died in 1918, Henry in 1919. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1960. Staff and visitors describe the scent of roses near Georgiana's former bedroom and a portrait of Henry sometimes moved to another room.

Also in the top ten: Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery (#6).

Statewide, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport ranks #1.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
