Wolf Creek Inn ranks #2 among Oregon's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Wolf Creek Inn in Wolf Creek ranks #2 among Oregon's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 90 Oregon sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Wolf Creek Inn ranks #2. It opened in 1883 as a stagecoach stop on the Applegate Trail through the Siskiyou Mountains and is the oldest continuously operating inn in the Pacific Northwest. Novelist Jack London stayed there repeatedly and completed his novel The Valley of the Moon, published in 1913, while in residence. Six separate published accounts describe activity there.
Past guests and researchers have reported encountering his apparition and disembodied voice in the room where he slept, and other guests describe doors opening and closing on their own and footsteps in the corridors. Staff and recent guest reports describe the reported figures as indifferent to the living rather than sinister.
Statewide, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
