Punderson Manor in Newbury Township ranks #4 in Ohio

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Punderson Manor in Newbury Township ranks #4 in HauntBound's 2026 index of Ohio's most haunted places. The index ranks 209 Ohio sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Punderson Manor ranks #4, and its nine separate published accounts are the most of any Ohio site in the index, the earliest dated to 1978. Karl Long built the 43-room English Tudor mansion in 1929 on land Lemuel Punderson settled around 1806. Staff and guests describe Lemuel Punderson, known at the lodge as "Pundy," turning lights on and off and pulling volumes partway from library shelves, and a woman in a blue-grey dress seen on the manor's spiral staircase. A park ranger making rounds one winter night reported an abrupt temperature drop on the staircase accompanied by a woman's laughter.

Statewide, Franklin Castle in Cleveland ranks #1; Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
