Vicksburg's McRaven House ranks among Mississippi's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, McRaven House in Vicksburg ranks among Mississippi's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 68 Mississippi sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
McRaven House, Mississippi's most famous haunted site, ranks #2. Built in three phases beginning around 1797 by Natchez Trace highwayman Andrew Glass, the house grew through additions by Stephen Howard in 1836 and John Bobb in 1849, and its grounds served as a Confederate camp during the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in three later publications, the earliest dated to 1811.
Visitors and staff report cold spots and doors opening on their own throughout the house, along with pacing footsteps attributed to John Bobb, killed by Union soldiers in 1864 after the fall of Vicksburg, the smell of pipe tobacco, and a sense of being watched near the oldest section, the pioneer kitchen where Glass once hid from pursuers along the Trace.
Statewide, King's Tavern in Natchez ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:McRaven House, 1445 Harrison St., Vicksburg, offers daytime history tours daily and evening haunted tours Friday and Saturday nights.
