Natchez is home to Mississippi's most haunted place

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Natchez is home to Mississippi's most haunted place in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 68 Mississippi sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

King's Tavern ranks #1. Built around 1769 as a blockhouse for Fort Panmure, the building became Richard King's tavern and inn in 1789, serving travelers on the Natchez Trace. A 1930s renovation uncovered the skeletal remains of three unidentified people behind the fireplace, along with a jeweled dagger; the discovery has anchored the building's folklore ever since. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in four later publications, the earliest dated to 1799.

Visitors and staff report figures glimpsed in mirrors, warmth in unoccupied beds and a woman in period dress on the upper floor.

Statewide, McRaven House in Vicksburg, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:King's Tavern, 613 Jefferson St., Natchez, has an eatery operating in the building again; a rum distillery next door is set to reopen.
