Marquette's Landmark Inn ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Marquette's Landmark Inn ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 191 Michigan sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Landmark Inn ranks #4, and no Michigan site has more separate published accounts than Landmark Inn. The hotel opened as the Northland Hotel on January 2, 1930, and Amelia Earhart stayed there in 1932 during a Midwest speaking tour. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in four later publications. Guests in the sixth-floor Lilac Room describe the smell of lilac perfume, lights turning on and off, and a young woman standing by the window; local tradition holds she was a librarian waiting for a sailor lost on Lake Superior, though her identity has never been documented.

Statewide, the Two Way Inn in Detroit ranks #1, and Eloise Asylum, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #10.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Landmark Inn, 230 N. Front St., Marquette, is a working hotel with rooms for overnight guests; Capers Restaurant and the Northland Pub are on the main floor.
