Mackinac Island holds five of Michigan's documented haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Mackinac Island holds five of Michigan's documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 191 Michigan sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Fort Mackinac ranks #3. The British built the limestone fort above the Straits of Mackinac in 1780; American forces held it after 1796, lost it in a surprise attack at the start of the War of 1812, then regained it in 1815. During the Civil War the fort held Confederate political prisoners, including the mayor of Baltimore, and in the late 1800s a typhoid outbreak killed several children of soldiers stationed there. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in five later publications, the earliest dated to 1970. Staff who work as historical interpreters at the fort have reported hearing musket fire and voices when no demonstrations are scheduled, and Mackinac State Historic Parks also stages Fort Fright, a haunted event on the fort grounds October 2 and October 3, that draws on the fort's recorded history.

Statewide, the Two Way Inn in Detroit ranks #1, and Eloise Asylum, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #10.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Fort Mackinac, on Mackinac Island, reachable only by ferry with no cars allowed, is a state historic site with daily museum access and re-enactments; Fort Fright runs October 2 and October 3.
