Henderson Castle ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Henderson Castle in Kalamazoo ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 191 Michigan sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Henderson Castle ranks #7. Businessman Frank Henderson built the 25-room Queen Anne mansion in 1895 and died there four years later; his wife, Mary, remained until 1908. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in five later publications. Staff and guests most often describe Mary Henderson at the top of the staircase, and in 1990 a visiting photographer developed film from the music room that showed a pale figure beside the piano, since nicknamed the Lady in White.

Statewide, the Two Way Inn in Detroit ranks #1, and Eloise Asylum, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #10.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
