FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calumet Theatre ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Calumet Theatre in Calumet ranks among Michigan's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 191 Michigan sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Calumet Theatre ranks #9. The 1900 theater's most enduring legend is the Polish actress Madame Helena Modjeska, who performed there before her death in 1909; in 1958 another actress reported seeing her apparition in the balcony, mouthing along with the performance. Two separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in six later publications, the earliest dated to 1958. Patrons and staff describe her figure in the theater along with cold spots and music playing with no source; disembodied screaming heard at night is said to trace to a man murdered in the theater in 1903.
Statewide, the Two Way Inn in Detroit ranks #1, and Eloise Asylum, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #10.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
