FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bardstown's Old Talbott Tavern is Kentucky's oldest documented haunted site
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Bardstown's Old Talbott Tavern is the oldest documented site in HauntBound's 2026 index of Kentucky's most haunted places. The index ranks 136 Kentucky sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Built in 1779 as a stagecoach stop on the Wilderness Road, the stone tavern is Kentucky's oldest surviving western stagecoach inn. Its guests are said to have included Daniel Boone and a young Abraham Lincoln, who passed through with his father in the 1790s, and King Louis Philippe of France, later king from 1830 to 1848, whose party is credited with the French murals upstairs.
Jesse James and members of his gang reportedly stayed at the tavern in the early 1880s; James is said to have fired at a glowing figure he mistook for an intruder, leaving bullet holes that remained in the upstairs murals for more than a century. Staff across generations describe a woman in white in the upper hallways, along with piano music with no one at the keys and furniture found moved in locked rooms.
Statewide, Waverly Hills Sanatorium, a former tuberculosis hospital in Louisville, ranks #1 and is also the state's most famous haunted site.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
