Jefferson County holds four of Kentucky's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, four Jefferson County places rank among Kentucky's ten most haunted in HauntBound's 2026 index, including Louisville's Belle of Louisville. The index ranks 136 Kentucky sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Belle of Louisville ranks #6. Built in Pittsburgh in 1914 as the steamboat Idlewild, she was renamed Avalon in 1947 for longtime Captain Winters and became the Belle of Louisville in 1962. Five separate published accounts describe activity there. Crew describe the pilothouse wheel turning unattended and a uniformed figure on the upper decks, attributed to Winters, and two workers killed in earlier accidents aboard.
The Witches' Tree ranks #7. Legend holds that a coven warned a city committee not to fell a maple slated for the 1889 May Day pole; the tree was cut anyway, and eleven months later, on March 27, 1890, a tornado tore through downtown Louisville, killing about 100 people. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors leave beads, charms and keys in its branches for luck.
Also in the top ten: Waverly Hills Sanatorium, a former tuberculosis hospital, at #1, and the Brown Hotel at #8.
Outside Jefferson County, Liberty Hall Historic Site in Frankfort ranks #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
