FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Evansville's Willard Library ranks #1 among Indiana's most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Willard Library in Evansville ranks #1 among Indiana's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 141 Indiana sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Willard Library ranks #1. A bequest from Willard Carpenter, a prosperous Evansville businessman, opened the library in 1885, and his daughter Louise Carpenter sued unsuccessfully to overturn the will in the 1890s. Six separate published accounts describe activity there. A custodian's 1937 encounter with a grey-clad figure in the basement gave the "Grey Lady" her name, and the library later installed live webcams, in 1999, so visitors can watch for her themselves; thousands have submitted possible sightings. The library's own account offers Louise Carpenter only as a probable explanation, not a confirmed one.

Statewide, Whispers Estate (visits by guided tour only), the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #7.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Willard Library, 21 N. 1st Ave., Evansville, is a free public library open during regular hours; six live "ghost cam" feeds are viewable on the library's website.

SHORT VERSION

Evansville's Willard Library ranks #1 among Indiana's most haunted places

Willard Library in Evansville ranks #1 among Indiana's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index, which ranks sites by separate published accounts rather than fame. The 1885 library's "Grey Lady" legend centers on Louise Carpenter, who unsuccessfully sued to overturn her father's bequest that funded the building, and on a custodian's 1937 sighting of a grey-clad figure in the basement. The library installed live webcams in 1999, and thousands of viewers have since submitted possible sightings. The free public library is open during regular hours.
