Three Atlanta landmarks rank among Georgia's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, three Atlanta landmarks rank among Georgia's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index, including Rhodes Hall at #1. The index ranks 181 Georgia sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Rhodes Hall ranks #1. Furniture magnate Amos Giles Rhodes commissioned the Stone Mountain granite mansion from architect Willis F. Denny II in 1902; his wife, Amanda Dougherty Rhodes, died in the house in 1927, and Amos died there in 1928. Tour guides describe heavy bootsteps on the second floor and apparitions glimpsed in bedroom mirrors, most often attributed to Amanda, along with artwork that shifts on the walls. The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, now headquartered in the mansion, runs an annual Legends and Lore tour.
Fox Theatre ranks #3. Architect Olivier J. Vinour designed the Moorish Revival movie palace, built for the Yaarab Shrine Temple and opened December 25, 1929. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 2007, when the Atlanta Journal-Constitution first wrote about the theater's ghosts. Staff describe phantom organ music and a backstage elevator that runs on its own; the ashes of two former house organists are interred beneath the pipes.
Also in the top ten: the Margaret Mitchell House (#7).
The index documents 181 haunted places across Georgia.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
