Ranked
- 1. Rhodes Hall Furniture magnate Amos Rhodes built this Stone Mountain granite mansion in 1902-1904, its grand staircase lit by stained-glass windows depicting the Confederacy's rise and fall. His wife Amanda died in the house in 1927 and Amos followed in 1928; the property now serves as headquarters for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Staff and tour guests report heavy bootsteps on the second floor, apparitions glimpsed in mirrors, and artwork that shifts on the walls. 5 original accounts · documented across 2 decades, 1984-1992 · retold in 6 later publications
- 2. Mercer-Williams House Museum General Hugh Mercer commissioned the Italianate mansion on Monterey Square in 1860, though construction dragged past the Civil War and no Mercer ever lived there. Antiques dealer Jim Williams restored the house in 1969, shot his assistant Danny Hansford in the study in 1981, was acquitted after four trials, and died in the home in 1990. Staff and visitors describe a man matching Williams walking the halls, with cold spots reported in the study. 4 original accounts · documented across 3 decades, 1969-2015 · retold in 4 later publications

- 5. Waverly Hall Cemetery Harris County's oldest burial ground has held graves since 1829, including antebellum officers Major Osborne Crook and General Henry Lowe, and remains in active use today. Paranormal investigators have logged sessions there for years, most notably a 2011 recording in which a researcher's question about death was answered, according to the investigator, with the words 'Not dead, dreaming'; visitors also report orbs and shadow figures among the headstones. Documented since 1829 · 5 independent sources · 3 media mentions
- 6. Kennesaw House / Marietta History Center Built as a cotton warehouse in 1845, this Marietta building became the Fletcher House hotel in 1855, hosted Union raiders before the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, and served as a Confederate and Union hospital and morgue during Sherman's 1864 campaign. Visitors report an elevator ride that seems to open onto the old field hospital, a Civil War-era surgeon riding the elevator, and a woman in period dress identified as Mrs. Fletcher. 6 original accounts · documented in 2009 · retold in 3 later publications
- 7. Margaret Mitchell House Built in 1899 and converted to apartments in 1919, this building's Apartment 1 was home to Margaret Mitchell from 1925 to 1932, where she wrote most of 'Gone with the Wind'; two arson fires in the 1990s destroyed all but the entryway tile before reconstruction. Janitorial staff have reported balcony doors reopening after locking and objects moved overnight, and a 1977 seance and later psychic reading were said to find Mitchell's spirit still present. 2 original accounts · documented across 2 decades, 1918-1977

Methodology
For purposes of the HauntBound Index, "most haunted" means the location with the strongest documented record of reported haunting phenomena. We evaluate the quantity, independence, persistence, and documentary quality of published reports. We do not attempt to determine whether paranormal phenomena are real, and we never count a source that only establishes a building's history as evidence of haunting claims. Repetitive coverage is subject to diminishing returns, so a story retold many times does not outrank a story independently documented. Rankings never consider commercial relationships.
The 2026 Index reflects sources identified and classified as of September 15, 2026.
Corrected September 18, 2026: a source audit revised the documented-account count for the Marshall House; the ranking reflects the correction.
Updated September 29, 2026: documented totals now exclude the private homes, operating hospitals and venues with nothing left to visit that were withdrawn on September 25 and 26. The ranked ten are unchanged.
Updated October 19, 2026: listings that could not be sourced, or that are private or have no public access, were withdrawn after an October review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
Updated October 23, 2026: more listings were withdrawn after a dignity and sourcing review, so some of the state's town counts are lower. The documented total stays as published until the November update.
This is a documentation ranking, not a visitation guide; sites not open to visitors are marked on their entries.
