Four Birmingham landmarks rank among Alabama's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, four Birmingham landmarks, including Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, rank among Alabama's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 100 Alabama sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark ranks #2. Colonel James Sloss founded the ironworks in 1881; it operated until 1971 with a workforce that was predominantly Black, working conditions the record credits with at least 47 deaths. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. The well-known "Slag" Wormwood story is fictional, invented for the site's haunted attraction, its foundation acknowledges. Visitors nonetheless report phantom whistles and disembodied voices near the old casting shed.
The Redmont Hotel ranks #3. Country singer Hank Williams Sr. spent his last night there on Dec. 30, 1952, before he died during the overnight drive to a New Year's Day show. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1934. Guest reports describe humming and guitar music attributed to Williams, and an anonymous "lady in white" on the ninth floor.
Also ranked: the Alabama Theatre (#6) and the Tutwiler Hotel (#8).
Statewide, Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
