FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Huntsville is home to Alabama's top-ranked haunted place
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Huntsville is home to Alabama's top-ranked haunted place in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 100 Alabama sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Maple Hill Cemetery ranks #1. LeRoy Pope, a local planter and one of the town's founders, sold the city its first two acres for the burial ground on Sept. 14, 1822, and it has grown to more than 80,000 graves, including five Alabama governors and five United States senators. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1839. Visitors describe figures in 19th-century dress near the older monuments and cold spots in the ironwork-enclosed family plots. The cemetery has been in continuous operation for more than two centuries and remains owned by the City of Huntsville today.
Statewide, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
