Madison was platted in 1836 as the capital of Wisconsin Territory, and the wedge of land between the Capitol and Lake Monona — the King Street corridor — became the city's earliest commercial spine, clustering hotels, saloons, and political clubrooms within walking distance of the Capitol's east entrance. On The Original Madison Ghost Walk, recurring reports include phantom footsteps in the Great Dane's Fess Hotel building, a psychic's account (sponsored by a local newspaper) of a spirit felt in the Great Dane's basement break room, a 'body-morphing' figure reported in the Majestic Theatre balcony, and a funeral-parlor-turned-music-venue history at Gamma Ray Bar that guides connect to reported voices in the basement office.
