EPIC Haunted Tours has offered overnight paranormal investigations at The Pillars, citing reports of unexplained activity within the mansion. The Civil War hospital function—treating casualties from engagements across West Tennessee—provides the biographical backdrop for the site's reputation. Paranormal investigators visiting through the tour operator have reported equipment responses and audio anomalies, particularly in the rooms understood to have served medical functions.

The accumulation of politically prominent visitors and the dual-loyalty hospital use during a period of intense regional violence give The Pillars an unusual historical density. The Action News 5 report documenting EPIC Haunted Tours' access to the property notes that investigators find the mansion among the more active sites on their West Tennessee circuit.

During that period, 253 workers died in documented underground accidents. At its deepest, the mine reached 9,000 feet — the deepest copper mine in the world at the time — and its No. 2 shaft hoist house is a National Historic Landmark.

Carnton, built in 1826 in Franklin, Tennessee, served as the largest temporary Confederate field hospital after the November 30, 1864, Battle of Franklin. Approximately 300 wounded soldiers were treated inside the house in a single night, and four Confederate generals' bodies were laid out on the back porch the following morning. Carrie and John McGavock later donated land for the McGavock Confederate Cemetery on the property — the largest privately owned military cemetery in the United States.

Carter House

Franklin, TN

The Carter House in Franklin, Tennessee, was built in 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter. On November 30, 1864, it served as the command post for Union Brigadier General Jacob Cox during the Battle of Franklin while the Carter family sheltered in the basement. The house and outbuildings absorbed more than 1,000 bullet impacts that night — one of the highest concentrations of Civil War bullet damage on any standing structure. Carter's son Tod, a Confederate captain, was mortally wounded in the battle and died in the house two days later.
