The ghost lore of Sophronia Strong Hall, documented in UT-published sources, holds that Sophie Strong's spirit watched over the women living in the residence hall. Her activity was characterized as protective and slightly mischievous, not threatening. According to UTK's Volopedia entry 'Ghost - Sophronia Strong Kept Watch Over Residents,' her presence was anchored to her February 17 birthday, when she reportedly appeared in white in bathroom mirrors. One frequently cited account describes Sophie seen 'in the mirror standing behind one of the new residents as she brushed her hair.'

Residents described a range of phenomena: doors locked from the inside with no one within, bathroom doors that mysteriously secured themselves, and hovering lights in hallways. Most notably, students reported that Sophie appeared when conflict was breaking out, 'looking disapprovingly at those whose voices were raised.' This protective-mother framing distinguishes Sophie from most other campus ghosts.

A notable named account: in August 1988 desk worker Jackie Reinert reported witnessing the ghost 'moving through the lobby, sort of dancing' around 3 a.m., noting an unusual cooling of the lobby despite the summer heat. In 2008 the East Tennessee Paranormal Research Society conducted an investigation on her birthday and recorded a 20-degree temperature differential at Sophronia's portrait and 'orbs' on video in the stairwell, though no mirror apparition appeared that night.

Following the 2008 renovation and the building's conversion to academic use, published reports of sightings have dropped off significantly. UTK's own folklore series notes the change. The decades of accumulated witness accounts from former residents constitute one of the better-documented campus haunting traditions in the southeastern United States.
