The building at the center of the Oregon Vortex started life around 1904 as an assay office for the Old Grey Eagle Mining Company, used to test the purity of gold and other ore pulled from the surrounding hills near Gold Hill. The mining operation was abandoned within a few years, and sometime in the 1910s the assay building slid off its foundation during a landslide, leaving it permanently tilted on the hillside.
Prospector William McCollugh rediscovered the derelict building and the surrounding site in 1914 and persuaded a friend, Scottish-born engineer and geologist John Litster, to come investigate it. Litster spent years studying what he described as unusual effects within a roughly 165-foot radius of the site, and in 1930 opened it to paying visitors for a nickel a head as the House of Mystery, making it one of the earliest documented 'mystery spot' style attractions in the United States, predating better-known sites like California's Mystery Spot.
After Litster's death in 1959, his wife sold the property to Ernie and Irene Cooper, whose descendants have run it ever since; by recent accounts their daughter Maria and grandson Mark oversee day-to-day operations. The attraction has drawn skeptics as well as visitors: magician and paranormal investigator James Randi photographed and analyzed the site in 1998 and concluded the effects were the product of forced perspective and a tilted visual frame of reference rather than any anomaly in gravity or magnetism, an explanation similar to those offered for other roadside gravity-hill attractions. In March 2025, flooding on nearby Sardine Creek damaged the site, closing it to visitors; owners have targeted a reopening around 2027.

The Oregon Vortex's reputation rests on a set of visual effects demonstrated on guided tours of the tilted House of Mystery building and the sloped ground around it: balls set down on certain surfaces appear to roll uphill, brooms balance upright on their bristles, and two people of equal height appear to grow or shrink depending on where they stand within the site's roughly 165-foot 'vortex' radius. Founder John Litster, who studied the property for years before opening it commercially in 1930, framed these as evidence of a genuine anomaly affecting gravity, light, and magnetism.
The explanation favored by scientists and skeptics is that the House of Mystery's dramatically tilted structure, built on a slope after sliding off its foundation, creates a false visual horizon that tricks the eye and brain, an effect known as forced perspective. Magician and skeptic James Randi documented the site with photography and measurements in 1998 and concluded the phenomena were optical rather than physical. The Oregon Vortex has nonetheless remained a fixture of Pacific Northwest roadside oddity lore for nearly a century and has been featured on paranormal-themed television, including a 2017 episode of Ghost Adventures that visited the site as part of a broader trip through the Gold Hill area.
