Est. 1895 · Finger Lakes hospitality history · Ontario County stagecoach-era tavern site (est. 1818) · NY Haunted History Trail member
The site at 111 South Main Street in Naples has served travelers since Simeon Lyon built a tavern there in 1818, positioning it on the stagecoach route connecting Geneva and Bath through Ontario County. That original wood-frame building was replaced in 1895 with the current two-and-a-half story brick structure that still stands.
Naples, settled in the early nineteenth century and known for its grape-growing and winemaking, sits at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. The hotel became a fixture of the village commercial district, operating a bar, restaurant, and rooms for travelers across multiple generations of ownership.
The hotel is listed on the Haunted History Trail of New York State and was featured on Season 8, Episode 2 of the Syfy channel's Ghost Hunters, bringing regional and national attention to its paranormal reputation. As of that broadcast, roughly 10 percent of guests booked specifically because of the haunted history.
The 1895 building retains its original exterior masonry. Ten suite-style rooms occupy the upper floors, and the property includes a seasonal restaurant and a basement bar.

The Naples Hotel's paranormal roster, as documented by the Haunted History Trail of New York State and the hotel's own account, includes several distinct figures. Alice is described as a woman who appears seated in the front dining room; her two children have been seen looking out from upstairs windows. Another figure, referred to as Topper, moves through multiple areas of the hotel without a clear historical identification.
The third floor carries the heaviest reported activity. A man died by suicide there, and guests and staff associate the flickering of lights and unexplained movement of framed artwork in that area with his presence. A Civil War soldier has been reported descending the basement stairs. One room's front area carries a persistent scent of lilac attributed to a female presence. Two additional male figures have been identified in a single room by guests comparing notes.
SyFy's Ghost Hunters sent an investigation team to the hotel for Season 8, Episode 2. The hotel does not stage commercial paranormal tours but markets its haunted reputation as a feature of the overnight experience. Staff have described hearing whispered conversations in empty hallways and finding locked doors on the third floor.
The sensitivity around the suicide — a real death at an unspecified historical date — is handled by the hotel without gore or graphic detail, and those conventions are followed here.
