Est. 1900 · Gilded Age Architecture · Hudson Valley Estate · Zabriskie Family History · Sculpture and Commemoration

Blithewood Mansion emerged as an architectural monument to the Zabriskie family's wealth and prominence at the turn of the 20th century. Built in 1900, the mansion served as the principal residence for Captain Andrew C. Zabriskie, a National Guard officer and substantial real estate developer. The property's manicured gardens and elegant architecture reflected the family's status in Hudson Valley society.

Blithewood represented more than mere domestic luxury. Zabriskie commissioned a series of sculptures for the mansion's gardens—statues depicting each of his daughters, with each statue representing a specific stage of the girls' development through adolescence into young adulthood. The ambitious sculptural project reflected both the father's love and the artistic values of the era.

The family history, however, was marked by tragedy. One of Zabriskie's daughters fell to her death from a window of the family's New York City apartment. The exact circumstances of her death remain unclear—whether she fell accidentally, jumped intentionally, or became victim to another's actions. Her death cast a shadow over the Zabriskie family and the Blithewood estate.

Following Zabriskie's era, the mansion changed ownership and purpose multiple times. In 1951, the property was donated to Bard College, an elite liberal arts institution. The college has maintained the mansion as a functional facility, using it to house library services, administrative offices, and academic spaces. Despite its institutional role, the building retained its historical character and architectural significance.

The gardens surrounding Blithewood continue to display the statues commissioned during Zabriskie's ownership. Three of the four original statues remain visible in the gardens. Most notably, a pedestal stands empty where a fourth statue should occupy—a silent monument to the daughter who died and presumably would have been depicted in that sculpture.
