Est. 1884 · 1884 limestone Romanesque former First Congregational Church · Grand Center Arts District venue · Adaptive reuse from religious to performing-arts use
The building that now houses The Grandel Theatre was constructed in 1884 as the First Congregational Church of St. Louis. Designed in a limestone Romanesque revival style, the church anchored what is now Grandel Square in the broader Midtown / Grand Center area. The First Congregational congregation departed in the early 20th century, after which the building cycled through multiple uses.
In the 1980s and 1990s the building was renovated for theatrical use as The Grandel Theatre. After a 2016 closure for further renovations, the property has continued to host performances and special programming as part of the Grand Center Arts District ecosystem alongside the Fox Theatre, Powell Hall, and Stifel Theatre. The Grand Center Arts District itself operates the venue's haunted-tour partnership programming.
The Grandel hosts the St. Louis Paranormal Research Society's exclusive haunted investigations as well as haunted dinner tours in partnership with neighboring restaurant The Dark Room. According to Grand Center, the venue has been the site of 'one confirmed historical death on the property,' though specific decedent details are not publicly attributed in available sources.

According to Grand Center's tour-program materials and KSDK's coverage, paranormal activity at The Grandel has been reported by dozens of staff and crew through construction projects on the property. Specific manifestations described in the source materials include a period-attired figure seen walking the theatre aisles (and on occasion appearing to take a seat as if to enjoy the show), unexplained backstage sounds reported by performers, and 'reported images and video of unexplained phenomena' (specific media not published).
The St. Louis Paranormal Research Society operates exclusive haunted investigations at the venue and offers visitors the chance to use the same investigative equipment its researchers employ on-site. The Dark Room (the restaurant attached to the Grand Center campus) hosts dinner-plus-tour packages. Together these partnerships make the Grandel one of St. Louis's most actively programmed haunted-venue experiences.
We present these accounts as venue-operator and partner-operator claims rather than as independently verified paranormal investigation. The 'one confirmed historical death on the property' referenced by Grand Center is cited in the tour-promotion language but not specifically attributed in public sources we located.
