Est. 1918 · Part of the Mantorville Historic District, National Register of Historic Places since 1974 · One of the oldest continuously operating community theaters in southeastern Minnesota · Site of documented Prohibition-era speakeasy (circa 1939 archival records)
Mantorville, Minnesota, is one of the most intact historic limestone-built downtowns in the Upper Midwest. The entire twelve-block district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, encompassing the Opera House at the corner of Fifth and Main streets.
The Opera House was constructed in 1918 following a fire that destroyed portions of the central business district. It was designed as both a performance space and a community hub, initially incorporating a bar area. The building subsequently served a variety of uses across the 20th century: by 1939 it operated as the '400 Nite Club,' and at various times housed a silent movie theater, a roller skating rink, and city offices. The Mantorville Theatre Company reclaimed the space as a playhouse in the 1970s.
When city resources proved insufficient to maintain the aging structure, the Mantorville Restoration Association — organized in 1963 — took over management. A careful rehabilitation in 2005-2006 addressed the roof, electrical systems, plumbing, heating, and interior finishes, with local artists and decorators restoring much of the original historic character.
Today the Mantorville Theatre Company performs year-round: summer melodramas run Thursday through Saturday, while fall and winter programming features musicals, comedies, and dramas. The building is also available for private events including concerts, recitals, wine tastings, and weddings.

The Mantorville Opera House's haunting tradition is one of the most consistently reported in southeastern Minnesota. The building's primary spirit, known as Ellen, is described as a former performer who has attached herself to the theatrical space. Ellen is characterized as playful and mischievous: performers report shoes and costume pieces disappearing and reappearing days later, a fog machine activating independently, and props relocated between rehearsals. Performer and director Priscilla Ruemping has described multiple interactions over years of work in the building, including hearing a clear 'goodbye' spoken in response to her farewell, and being physically grabbed at the ankles by something in the basement stairwell.
A second presence, Robert, is associated with the main stage and described as a former piano player. A third spirit, Harold, is said to inhabit the basement and is considered more temperamental — investigators who forget to greet him upon entering have reported physical contact including being pinched. During one investigation, a clear voice saying 'Yeah' was captured on audio in apparent response to a question.
Hawk Horvath, founder of After Hours Paranormal Investigations and based in Rochester, has conducted more than 45 investigations of the Opera House over 15+ years. Horvath's team reports capturing video of lights activating independently on an infrared camera positioned on the stairway to the upper floor. Regional news coverage by KAAL ABC 6 (Rochester) documented the Opera House's haunting reputation and interviewed Horvath and Ruemping on-site in 2024.
The paranormal tradition is well-established enough that after-hours investigation events are offered to the public, and the Opera House is routinely featured in regional guides to Minnesota's haunted places.
