Gooding College opened in 1917 under the sponsorship of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the surviving 1920 building on University Avenue served as its men's dormitory and classroom space. The college folded in 1938 amid financial hardship common to small denominational colleges of the era. In 1941 the Methodist Church deeded the property to the State of Idaho for conversion into a tuberculosis hospital, a use badly needed as TB remained a leading cause of death in the region.
World War II delayed the project: equipment and staff shortages pushed the hospital's opening back to May 1947. Once running, the Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital treated as many as 150 patients at a time in a 19,000-square-foot building of more than 45 rooms. Treatment for tuberculosis in this era was slow and often unsuccessful before antibiotics became widely available, and patients who died at the hospital were not uncommon.
The hospital closed in 1976 as TB caseloads fell nationally and the state consolidated care elsewhere. The building sat before private owners acquired it in the early 2000s and converted it into a bed-and-breakfast, first known as the Get Inn and, after a change of owners around 2012, renamed the University Inn. It now operates as the Gooding University Inn, offering single rooms and whole-wing rentals for events and reunions.
The building's dual identity, first a college, then a hospital, has drawn regular attention from paranormal investigation groups and, in 2019, the Travel Channel series Ghost Adventures.

Western Idaho Paranormal, a local investigation group that has run overnight events at the inn, describes the building as one of its most consistently active sites. Lead investigator Trevor Palmer has said most evidence collected is audio rather than visual, and the group's best-known recording captured a child's voice saying "bye Dada" at roughly 11:30 p.m. in a section of the building that was unoccupied at the time.
Other reports collected by local news over the years describe an apparition of an older man in a white coat, consistent with hospital staff, and a woman seen with a young girl, along with footsteps and whispers in hallways with no one present. A Deseret News feature on a 2008 ghost-hunting event at the hospital documented similar first-hand accounts from investigators working through the building's former patient wards.
The building's history as a working tuberculosis ward, closed only in 1976, gives the reports a specific and recent anchor rather than a vague folklore. In July 2019, Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures crew investigated the site for the Travel Channel, bringing wider attention to a location that had already built a regional reputation among Idaho paranormal groups.

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows established a 240-acre fraternal-care complex in Liberty, Missouri, that operated as an orphanage, nursing home, hospital, and school built in the Jacobethan Revival architectural style. The hospital, completed in 1951, served members of the fraternity, their widows, and their orphans. The site has since been restored and reopened as Belvoir Winery and Inn.
Santa Fe, NM
The Drury Plaza Hotel in downtown Santa Fe occupies the former St. Vincent Hospital. The Sisters of Charity, invited to Santa Fe by Archbishop Lamy in the 1860s, ran a series of hospitals and orphanages on the site; the main building served as St. Vincent Hospital until 1977, later held state offices, and was converted into a hotel that opened in 2014.
Buffalo, NY
The Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo was constructed beginning in 1871 as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, based on the Kirkbride Plan of psychiatric treatment. Designed by renowned architect H.H. Richardson and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the 203-acre campus formally opened in 1880. The facility operated as a psychiatric hospital until 1974, when patients were transferred and the complex fell into decay. Modern restoration efforts have partially reopened the campus as Hotel Henry.
