Hawaii's Plantation Village opened in 1992 as a 50-acre open-air museum in Waipahu, built around roughly 30 restored and replica structures that recreate a sugar-plantation camp from 1850 to 1950. During that century, Hawaii's sugar industry brought close to 400,000 contract laborers from China, Japan, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Korea, Okinawa, and the Philippines to work alongside Native Hawaiians, and the village's houses -- a Chinese cookhouse, a Japanese shrine, a Portuguese-style home, and others -- are organized by the ethnic camps that grew up around Oahu's plantations.
The museum sits on land tied to the former Oahu Sugar Company plantation in Waipahu, one of the territory's largest sugar operations before it closed in 1995. The museum's exhibits and guided tours focus on daily camp life: labor conditions, food, religious practice, and the multiethnic communities that took shape around the mills. Hawaii's Plantation Village runs five guided tours a day, in English and Japanese, through buildings that include a plantation store, manager's office, infirmary, and bathhouse alongside the ethnic-camp houses.
Since 2006, the museum's grounds have also hosted Haunted Plantation, an independently produced Halloween attraction that uses the village's existing structures rather than built sets, staged over a handful of nights each October.

Staff and volunteers describe recurring paranormal reports concentrated in a handful of the village's houses. The most-cited account involves the Portuguese House, where a young girl is said to have died in a plantation-era fire after being left alone; staff and the 2011 Ghost Hunters investigation describe sightings of a girl in white near the house's window, along with a docent's account of feeling her hair pulled and flicked across her face. In the Puerto Rican house, staff report a museum-owned Japanese doll repeatedly found outside its display case, and workers in the Okinawan home have reported sensations of choking, which several Haunted Plantation actors also described during the seasonal event, contributing to a reported 15 to 20 cast departures over nine years.
Executive Director Jeffrey Higa has said he did not believe the reports until repeated firsthand accounts from staff changed his view. In one documented response, a Hawaiian kahu (spiritual practitioner) blessed the Portuguese House with holy water, ti leaf, and salt and concluded the presence there was protective rather than threatening. The museum has been investigated on camera twice, by Ghost Hunters in 2011 and The Dead Files in 2016.

Decommissioned in 1988, the ship was transferred to Bay City and has been maintained as the centerpiece of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum.
