Tarpon Springs' development as a resort and commercial town centered on Spring Bayou in the late 19th century. John K. Cheney, a Philadelphia banker who arrived in 1889, redirected the sponge trade to the town, and by 1890 the Cheney Sponge Company had established the warehouses that eventually made Tarpon Springs internationally known for its Greek immigrant sponge divers. The Victorian homes ringing the bayou form a National Register historic district.
