Huntington's Keith-Albee is West Virginia's most family-friendly haunted site

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Huntington's Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center is the most family-friendly haunted site in HauntBound's 2026 index of West Virginia's most haunted places. The index ranks 77 West Virginia sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Architect Thomas W. Lamb designed the Keith-Albee Theatre for brothers Abe and Sol Hyman, whose budget grew from $250,000 to $2 million over 14 months of construction. It opened in Huntington on May 8, 1928, as a vaudeville and movie palace on the Keith-Albee circuit, and it is now the 2,417-seat Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, run by Marshall University's Marshall Artists Series.

Guests describe a woman in a 1940s red dress, known as the Lady in Red, in the mirrored parlor outside the mezzanine-level women's restroom, and multiple visitors have independently described a sensed presence following them down the staircase to the lower-level restrooms. History Goes Bump devoted a podcast episode to the theater's reported phenomena.

Statewide, Hill Top House Hotel in Harpers Ferry (original building demolished in 2022) ranks #1, and the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #9.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, 925 4th Ave., Huntington, is a working theater with performances scheduled through the season; tickets start at $52.
