The Historic Davenport Hotel ranks #4 among Washington's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, The Historic Davenport Hotel in Spokane ranks #4 among Washington's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 107 Washington sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Historic Davenport Hotel ranks #4. Architect Kirtland Cutter designed the hotel for restaurateur Louis M. Davenport, who opened it in 1914 with then-remarkable amenities including central air conditioning and a pipe organ in the lobby. Six separate published accounts describe activity there. The hotel's best-documented legend is Ellen McNamara, a New York widow who fell to her death through the lobby skylight in 1920; guests and staff have since reported a woman in 1920s dress peering over the mezzanine railing toward the lobby below. Davenport himself lived in a suite at the hotel until his death in 1951 and reportedly said in life, 'I never want to leave here'; night-shift staff have long reported a figure in a bathrobe and slippers walking the guest-floor hallways, matching his habit of late-night walks through the building.
Statewide, Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub in Seattle ranks #1, and Pike Place Market, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
