Two Stowe landmarks rank among Vermont's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, two Stowe landmarks, Emily's Bridge and the Green Mountain Inn, rank among Vermont's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 34 Vermont sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Emily's Bridge ranks #6. The 1844 Howe-truss span over Gold Brook is Vermont's best-known haunted site and is home to the legend of "Emily," said to have died there after being jilted by a lover. Two separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors report scratches on cars after crossing, a whitish glowing figure, and cries from inside the bridge at night. The Vermont Historical Society has found no record of any death matching the story, a Stowe-area resident has said she invented a version of the tale to entertain local children, and the modern legend appears to date only to the late 1960s or 1970s.
Green Mountain Inn ranks #10. Peter Lovejoy built the stagecoach inn in 1833, and Mark Lovejoy renamed it the Green Mountain Inn after buying the property in 1893. One firsthand published account, retold in nine later publications, describes activity there. Inn legend holds that Boots Berry, born in the room that is now Room 302, fell to his death from the roof in 1902 after rescuing a stranded girl during a snowstorm, and guests and staff describe hearing tap-dancing footsteps on the roof when it snows.
Statewide, the Hartness House Inn in Springfield ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
