FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bennington has four documented haunted places in new Vermont index

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Bennington is home to four of the sites in HauntBound's 2026 index of Vermont's most haunted places, including one in the state's top ten. The index ranks 34 Vermont sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Glastenbury Mountain ranks #2. The 3,747-foot peak anchors roughly 36 square miles of wilderness that author Joseph Citro named the Bennington Triangle in 1992, after five people disappeared in the area between 1945 and 1950, including 74-year-old guide Middie Rivers and Bennington College student Paula Jean Welden. Four separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors describe an unusual absence of birdsong and animal sound on the upper mountain, and Vermont Public's Brave Little State podcast covered the disappearances in 2025.

Statewide, the Hartness House Inn in Springfield ranks #1, and Emily's Bridge in Stowe, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #6.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Glastenbury Mountain, Bennington, is reached on foot by the Long Trail, which the Green Mountain Club maintains to the summit fire tower; the tower is closed, so do not climb it.
